Phua Juan Yong

Phua Juan Yong is a Singapore based artist and image maker whose works are largely based on spaces and places that are inspired by his early childhood memories. Trained in graphic design, his foray into the digital space started when he found illustrations to be too flat for his liking, and picked up 3D design as a hobby. Over the years, Juan’s design practice became more of an art practice, where mediums are explored and questioned in the process of storytelling.

Spring/Summer

4:3 aspect ratio, 45s video loop
2022

Spring/Summer is a play on the concept of subverting billboard spaces reserved for ads, where old Shanghainese posters are recontextualized as modern day advertisements with a catch. The centre stands a “model” unconcerned and uninterested, as if she, herself, is bored by the very “ad” she stands in.
